The Heritage Jazz Orchestra, led by Luke Malewicz is the premier repertory jazz orchestra in Chicago. It was formed in 2016 with the intention of bringing the best talent that Chicago has to offer and explore classic big band repertoire including Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Buddy Rich, and Stan Kenton. Since its inception, the band has been featured regularly at many premier venues throughout the Chicagoland area including Andy’s Jazz Club, Winter’s Jazz Club, and the Jazz Record Art Collective. In addition to its club performances, the HJO also presents entire album recreation concerts. It has recreated several albums by the Count Basie Orchestra and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. The HJO also engages in educational outreach with local organizations including the Chicago Jazz Institute and frequently holds clinics at local area high schools.
Leslie Buekelman is everywhere in the Chicago music scene. One night she’s fronting the indie-rock band Miss Remember, another she’s swinging with the 18-piece Chicago Skyliners Big Band, and then she’s belting her own tunes with her Brite Lite band, or singing 3-part harmony with the fabulous Oh Yeahs. She’s performed in many of these incarnations at Hey Nonny, and for this show she returns with the Heritage Jazz Orchestra – repeating her stunning 2019 performance.
