Soul of the Tango features clarinetist Kathryne Pirtle, pianist Richard Johnson, and jazz vocalist Morgan Pirtle performing a heart-stirring array of torrid soul music from Brazil, Argentina, Spain, and France. Tunes from Antonio Jobim (“Girl from Ipanema”), João Gilberto, tango-master Astor Piazzolla and Vittorio Monti (you’ll know his tune “Csárdás”) will receive the virtuoso treatment this trio specializes in. Clarinetist Kathryne Pirtle is everywhere in our town, performing with the Lake Forest Symphony, wrangling the Orion Ensemble, and as a soloist. She’s one of those musicians with a wide-ranging musical curiosity, exquisite taste, and mind-blowing skill. Richard Johnson is another in that category. This Chicago-based piano virtuoso is in demand all over the world as a teacher and performer, but sometimes (when we’re lucky) he shows up at Hey Nonny too. Jazz fans, you will not hear — here or anywhere else — a pianist as tasteful and talented as Richard (in addition to being one of the nicest guys in the world). Morgan Pirtle too is a triple threat — one of Chicago’s top young jazz singers (she debuted at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2018 with Morgan Pirtle + 5), an in-demand educator, and a composer of music at the contemporary intersection of jazz and “classical” music. Put it all together and it will be one musically soulful afternoon!
