Sunshine Boys make their long-awaited return to the Hey Nonny stage, buoyed by a bevy of new songs and revived energy. The original trio (Dag Juhlin, Jackie Schimmel, Freda Love Smith) formed in 2016 and released two highly acclaimed albums before Smith’s retirement from rock music in 2022. Juhlin and Schimmel thought it was the end of their beloved band, but it was at Smith’s insistence that they continue with Gerald Dowd on drums. Turns out it was the perfect idea.
The group’s urgent, highly melodic songs earned them an instant following and glowing accolades — Big Stir Magazine named their debut album Blue Music Album of the Decade; legendary rock journalist wrote that their follow-up Work and Love was even better than its predecessor. Their new material takes the sparkling Sunshine Boys sound to even greater heights, infused with Dowd’s musical, muscular drumming and vocals. It’s a confident band, reborn and ready, with their stunning songs alive once more.
